Property description

Strategy: Conversion

A charming chapel conversion with two bedrooms and far-reaching views, in a sought-after elevated position.

Description

With a charming, semi-rural setting between the villages of Minchinhampton and Chalford, this characterful home offers stunning, far-reaching views over the surrounding countryside. The former chapel was initially constructed in 1902 and was known as the Victoria Memorial Chapel; it was built to commemorate the death of Queen Victoria in the same year. The chapel has since been converted to a very high standard, creating a stylish and well-appointed home without losing its considerable character. Internally, there are a number of original features including high arched windows, wood panelling and a stunning vaulted ceiling in the main reception room, which is a fabulous space for entertaining and offers a real wow factor with its stained-glass windows. The interiors are beautifully presented and incorporate modern additions which are balanced by the character features. The ground floor is entered via a welcoming hallway leading to a bedroom, shower room with WC/laundry facilities and the magnificent sitting room, which leads to a contemporary kitchen on the south-east side of the house. The principal bedroom is situated on a mezzanine floor overlooking the reception space and incorporates a fabulous ‘open’ bathroom with freestanding bath as well as en suite shower room.

On the first floor there is an impressive master suite which includes a dressing room and a very well-appointed bathroom. The second bedroom is on the ground floor and opposite the shower room/cloakroom. Outside there are terraced gardens and from the sitting out terraces there are lovely views across the surrounding countryside. Access to the property is via a driveway owned by the National Trust and there is private, gravelled parking to the front of the property

Outside
The property is set in an elevated position behind a beech hedge and is accessed via a driveway leading up to a private gravelled area to the front of the house. The garden to the rear is arranged over a series of terraces including mature borders, a paved patio for outdoor dining and a raised terrace with a pergola which is ideal for relaxing and taking in the views. There is a shed to the rear which houses the boiler.

Location

The Old Chapel is situated in a quiet, elevated position on Hyde Hill, adjoining beautiful open countryside and a number of equestrian establishments. There is an excellent local pub locally, The Ragged Cot, with a wider choice of amenities available in Minchinhampton, approximately a mile and a half to the southwest. There are excellent walking, riding and cycling routes from the doorstep, while nearby Stroud and Cirencester provide more comprehensive facilities including Waitrose supermarkets independent shops and farmers markets.

Road communications are excellent with junction 13 of the M5 motorway being about 10 miles away giving access to Bristol and Birmingham. Trains from Kemble or Stroud London Paddington take approximately 80-90 minutes.

Sporting opportunities in the area include golf at Minchinhampton (two courses), racing at Cheltenham, sailing at the Cotswold Water Park, polo at Cirencester Park, gliding at Aston Down as well as local rugby and cricket clubs. There are lovely walks over Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons where cattle freely roam in the summer months.
